Why We Work Online

Thoughtful, accessible and evidence-based counselling - wherever you are.

At The Naum Centre, we've intentionally chosen to be a predominantly online counselling practice.

It wasn't simply a response to changing technology or the way people work today. It was a deliberate decision based on what we believe makes counselling more accessible, sustainable and easier to fit into everyday life.

For many people, finding the time and energy to attend an appointment can be one of the biggest barriers to seeking support. Between work, study, parenting, caring responsibilities and commuting, travelling to a counselling session isn't always practical.

By working primarily online, we're able to remove many of those barriers while providing the same thoughtful, collaborative and evidence-based counselling experience.

Is Online Counselling Effective?

In short - yes.

A growing body of research has found that online counselling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy for many common mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, grief and relationship difficulties.

Research consistently shows that one of the strongest predictors of successful counselling isn't whether you meet in an office or over video - it's the quality of the relationship between you and your counsellor.

When people feel understood, supported and able to engage openly in the counselling process, meaningful change can happen regardless of where the conversation takes place.

For many clients, being in their own familiar environment can actually make it easier to relax, speak openly and integrate what they discuss into everyday life.

Why More People Are Choosing Online Counselling

It fits into real life.

Counselling is most helpful when it's something you can realistically continue. Removing travel time and making appointments easier to attend often means people are able to prioritise their wellbeing more consistently.

It's accessible.

Whether you live in a regional community, travel frequently, have mobility challenges or simply have a busy schedule, online counselling makes professional support easier to access from anywhere in Australia.

It offers greater flexibility.

Attend your appointment from home, your workplace or another private space that feels comfortable to you. Many clients appreciate being able to return to their day without needing to commute across the city.

It's private.

Some people feel more comfortable attending counselling from a familiar environment rather than visiting a clinic. Online appointments can provide greater privacy while still offering a genuine therapeutic connection.

It supports continuity.

Life changes. You might move interstate, travel for work or relocate temporarily. Online counselling allows you to continue working with the same counsellor without unnecessary interruptions.

What to Expect

Online counselling is much like meeting in person, just through a secure Zoom video appointment.

You'll receive a confirmation email before your appointment with your Zoom link and any information you need beforehand.

At the scheduled time, you'll join the video session and meet with your counsellor just as you would in a consulting room. Together, you'll explore what's brought you to counselling, discuss your goals and work collaboratively towards meaningful change.

Many people are surprised by how quickly online counselling begins to feel natural.

Getting the Most from Online Counselling

A few simple steps can help you get the most from your appointment:

  • Choose a quiet, private space where you won't be interrupted.

  • Use headphones if they help you feel more comfortable or improve sound quality.

  • Check your internet connection before your appointment.

  • Silence notifications on your phone or computer where possible.

  • Allow yourself a few minutes afterwards to reflect before returning to your day.

Remember, there's no expectation that everything will be perfect. If technology doesn't cooperate, we'll simply work through it together.

Is Online Counselling Right for Everyone?

Online counselling is a good fit for many people, but it isn't the best option in every circumstance.

If we believe another form of support would better meet your needs, we'll discuss this openly with you and help you explore appropriate options. Our priority is always ensuring you receive the support that's most suitable for your situation.

The Naum Centre can provide some face to face counselling sessions on request, and our team will always do their best to accommodate your needs.

Why We've Chosen This Approach

At The Naum Centre, we believe good counselling shouldn't depend on where you live or how much time you have to travel.

Our online-first model allows us to focus our energy where it matters most - building genuine therapeutic relationships, providing thoughtful and evidence-based care, and making counselling more accessible for people across Australia.

If you're ready to begin, we'd be pleased to support you.
